Default 404 question...

one of my submitters (a good one) send me galleries. sometimes one of his galleries opens as 404 error, when i copy/paste again in browser and hit enter then is 404 again, when i click on link then again... finally after few trials i got gallery not 404... what do you think? url's doesn't changed so it opens sometimes as 404 and sometimes as gallery, strange isn't it? i don't know much about "force 404" but it may be it or what??

this use to happend when dns changes are in progress, maybe he is moving to a new server, but if this is happening for a month or more then it's something else.

Right now for example I'm moving my old galleries I had in revsharehosting to my paid server, I changed dns yesterday and the galleries sometimes load and some other don't

it happens very often, no way it will be dns changing.

another possibility is that the domain is in a round-robin configuration, and one of the boxes is misconfigured..

what does nslookup say?

nslookup is a unix tool that will tell you what IP addresses a domain resolves to..

Is the 404 page malicious? If it is just "server not found" then okay. But if he is redirecting to executables and popups I would ban him.

it's not so easy to say Austin... there is one russian script called "force 404" and it may work like this for example: ban first 100 uniques (and this ban means the surfer (and of course tgp owner cause he tries first) get gallery and the rest surfers is redirected... or sometimes you get 404 error and you think: "it's some problem, let's refresh again" and next time you get gallery but surfers get redirected, so i heard about it...

I really don't have the time to deal with this kind of things. That's why I use Autogallery SQL to scan all the galleries, if they load fine, if they don't it will remove them.

Druidd this is not you problem, it's the webmaster/submitter responsability, if the server fails for any reason you just delete the galleries and let him/her solve his problem!!!!

this may work for dumb cheaters, but many of them will simply allow your server's IP to passthrough..

hopefully autogallery's proxy scans will help remedy that problem, but even that's not foolproof..
