If you could build and adult host any way you want what are some the things you would offer and how much would you charge?

The only thing you have limiting you is you would have to start a T3 for the main line and a T1 for over flow.

Honestly Jack, I think you should look at changing your colo center if you have only a T3 and a T1 for overflow.

First - are you handling your own peering and routing or is someone else doing that? this will determine if you need a router, etc.

Second, you are going to need some switches... preferably more then one so that if one blows up (has happened) you have a backup.

Third, you need a good facility with redundant power (for real, a blackout/brownout can happen anywhere and knock your network offline)

Fourth, you need some servers for your network - two nameservers and a mail server at least. Try and have your two nameservers in separate locations if possible.

Fifth, get yourself a high quality server for virtual hosting. make backups.

Sixth, figure out how you wanna price your product - ultra cheap, middle of the road or top of the pile? create your account packages with decent amounts of disk space since drives are cheap now... people dont like to pay excess for overages, keep it a flat rate and buy some advertising.

Seventh, get a new pipe :)

Hello LostMind,

What do you mean by a colo center?

Iím not worried about the server end of thinks I have 37 NT severs and 16 Linux server and if I need more I can have them built LOL My work want me to give them a proposal on setting up an adult hosting companyís right not there only hosting non-adult sites if they like my proposal they want me to head it up.
Once we need faster net speed will buy but thee is no point in wasting money LOL

Iím looking for cool things I can offer customer like options for dealing with certain credit card companies, fee domain names, free wed design pack ECT.

a colo center? A secure facility to house your servers. Should have some earchtquake protection, fire protection, environmental controls and a redundant power supply.

Cool things to offer clients?

A good stats package (important cuz everyone loves stats and needs to know where their traffic comes from)
Simple billing plans
Fast and friendly tech support (not every webmaster is technical)

Are what I consider essentials.

As for design and stuff? I dunno if it is needed... likewhoa offers design I believe.... but I dont know if it helps their hosting business etc..

Two things I would like to see are a no-hype presentation and phone tech support.

By a no-hype presentation I mean an honest 'it will cost you $x.00' approach. I am so tires of seeing a choose one from column A and one from column B and then figure in your 95th percentile pricing system.

Phone tech support is nice because I hate waiting for someone at a host to respond. There is nothing more frustrating than feeling that a tech passes by your difficult tech question and goes on to a simpler one. Besides that there's nothing that instills confidence in a company more than a man (or woman) that answers their own phone.

Unless I could find a solid bandwidth provider with dirt cheap prices I wouldn't go near it. You're going to need to be able to resell the BW at idiotically low prices in order to be compeditive, and you're going to need to depend on the BW once you sell it. The problem is that kind of quality BW at the kind of prices we're talking about just doesn't exist.

The other thing is what Walter said. He's right, this "95th percentile" thing is like a big government operation, you know, 2+2=6. So that's why you paid for 600 gig when you only used 400 for the month, and that's also why you now have to pay for an extra 600 gig becasue you had three days in a row where you used 900. I"ll bet $100 right now it was a lawyer that thought up that shit.

The bottom line is just be honest, and use 2+2=4 type math with people. Make all the information available to a webmaster that he might need to make decisions about what's he's doing. That means BW useage and logs. Do not charge extra for logs! I can't tell you how many times people have tried that shit with me. This is rediculous. Logs are essential, especially in adult hosting. It has to be part of the package by default. Just give the guy access to the log by putting it in HIS directory on your server so he can roll it over, delete it, whatever. Just don't give them some idiotic online "APP" that works the logs for them. Most of the ones I've seen do everything except tell you who your referrers are. Which is, of course, the most important thing. With out referrer stats the rest of the info is fairly useless.

So there it is, be honest, be cheap, and be easy to deal with. Unfortunatly it's the cheap part that's the problem. If you want to be honest, you have to charge them what they're actually going to end up paying up front, and that aint' going to be cheap!

It's too bad you are in Canada. Unless your consumption is in the gbps range, you are not going to get competitive pricing compared to the USA.

Everybody expects so much from their host nowadays. Good stats, easy billing, nearly free bandwidth, 24 hour 1.800 #'s, oodles of free tech support, blowjobs, free filipino gardeners and maids, a japanese chef and a free harem of hot asian women to go with their $9.99/month account with overages charged at $0.25/GB.

And people wonder why they hear so many horror stories of hosting companies going under or no one answering phone/emails/icq's - because these cheap ass ghetto hosts dont make a dime and cant pay anyone :)

I would like to thank every one for your help and ideas Iím sending my proposal first thing on the 20th

LostMind mind you lost me again? Our non-porn host offer way faster down load speed then most then most US hosting companies and with the dollar exchange being one US dollar to $1.5727 CAD we can offer way cheep prices then most US host, our non-porn host are doing great in the US market why would and adult host be any different
